Atlantic Green Conference features Mixson in its tour of LEED projects

The Sustainability Institute’s Atlantic Green Conference starts TOMORROW, June 19, and while tickets to the conference are sold out, you can still get in on some of their tours – including the Green Residential Tour, featuring Mixson, Hunley Waters, and Oak Terrace Preserve. The tour runs on Saturday, June 20 from 12-2 and tickets for the general public are $15.

The Atlantic Green Conference brings together experts from a multitude of green building backgrounds: solar energy, jobsite deconstruction, LEED documentation, greening historic buildings, green roofs, and countless others. The conference is being held, appropriately, at 10 Storehouse Row, in the Navy Yard in North Charleston. The Navy Yard is a high-density, mixed-use center in the heart of Noisette, North Charleston’s master-planned sustainable city-within-a-city.

North Charleston is well on its way to becoming one of the nation’s most sustainable cities, as projects like Noisette and Mixson testify. And what better place to host this year’s Atlantic Green Conference?

Park Circle named one of nation’s best neighborhoods

You and I know that Park Circle is a vibrant, engaging place to live, but Men’s Journal has picked up on it too! The most recent edition of the magazine cites Park Circle as an under-the-radar enclave whose recent development boom has mercifully “left its liberalism intact.” They also mention that Park Circle is full of “unique, character-driven, fun-loving” residents – they couldn’t be more right there!

Evolution Art Show continues this week

Evolution, Charleston’s most progressive, inclusive art show, is back for a second year and got off to an amazing start this weekend. Visual arts displays abounded in North Charleston and downtown, and the Talking Picture House on E. Montague Ave. showed two great indie films, The Graffitti Artist and The Lost Boys. Here’s what’s coming up this week:

It’s Piccolo time once again, and the rainy weather seems to have turned just in time! Piccolo Spoleto and Piccolo Fringe offer a spectacular chance to see a plethora of comedy, theater, music, and dance shows in two weeks. Get your rest in these next two days, because it’s going to be a busy two weeks!

For the full schedule of Piccolo events, go here. For Piccolo Fringe, hosted by Theatre 99 and The Have Nots!, click here – it’s 77 shows in 16 days, and all of them will be FUNNY. They’ve got national stars like the Upright Citizens Brigade and The Reckoning, as well as all of our amazing local stand-up and improv shows like Mary Kay Has a Posse and A Complete History of Charleston for Morons.

Hint: to avoid ticket processing and service fees, buy your tickets in person at the Gaillard Auditorium box office. Thanks to Theatre 99 for that tip!

Film Screening by Charleston Moves – VEER

Charleston Moves, our local organization advocating “active lifestyles and community well-being through transportation choices” is hosting a PRE-RELEASE screening of Veer, a documentary exploring America’s growing bicycle culture. The film follows 5 people whose lives are inextricably tied to bicycling over one year, detailing their personal struggles and what it means to be part of a community.

What makes this event even COOLER is that it’s being held at the Terrace Theater, James Island’s indie theater. The movie will show on June 4 at 7pm, and tickets are only $12, with the proceeds benefiting Charleston Moves. You could even win a slick electric bicycle in the raffle!

This week in North Charleston…

is going to be a busy one! First of all, there’s the Art Walk in the Olde North Charleston Business District (that’s E. Montague Ave, near Park Circle) on Wednesday, May 6 from 6-8pm. You won’t want to miss this chance to see the artwork REALLY north of Broad Street.

To ring in the summertime, the North Charleston Business District is hosting a Block Party on Friday, May 8 from 6:30-10:30pm. Everyone is welcome!

The North Charleston Arts Festival has been going on since May 1, but you’ve still got time to participate – there are individual events all week. On Saturday, May 9 the Arts Festival holds its grande finale, complete with fireworks, at Riverfront Park from 6-9pm. All you need to bring is a blanket – the event is completely free.

Greater Park Circle Film Society – next show on May 16

The Film Society is still going strong in their home at the Olde Village Talking Picture House, at 1080 E. Montague Ave. In fact, back in March the House got voted “Best Place to Watch Cheap Movies” by the Charleston City Paper (movies there are only $5 for non-members, and $2 for members!). If you’ve never been to one of their film showings, why not give it a try? The next film is The Project, on May 16, with a local short film called “Shorty” before the feature. Showings are at 4 and 7pm.

Oh yeah – and the popcorn’s free. How’s that for date night!

Mixson’s Big Pre-Earth Day

It was a busy Saturday, April 18 for Mixson. The morning began with the Green Village Tour finishing at Mixson. The Green Village Tour is in it’s third year and is produced by the Sustainability Institute. This annual community-oriented event winds through the streets of North Charleston, featuring the sustainable development projects of the past, present and future. This year the race ended at Mixson with a finish of food, drink, vendors and fun.

The day was only beginning as Mixson was a featured booth at Charleston County Recycling’s 2009 Earth Day Festival. The purpose of the Earth Day Festival is to increase awareness about the Lowcountry’s environmental issues, while celebrating Charleston’s environmental community and highlighting the challenges and successes.

“Hits for HALOS” Tennis Fundraiser for Abused and Neglected Local Children March 28-29

HALOS invites tennis fans, sponsors, and donors to a Pro/Am doubles tournament and Silent Auction March 28-29 at The I’On Club to raise funds for the HALOS Summer Camp Program for abused and neglected children in Charleston County.

Charleston, SC – March 13, 2009 – The “Hits for HALOS” Pro/Am tennis tournament will be held March 28-29 at The I’On Club, 252 Ponsbury Road in Mount Pleasant. Spectators are welcome to join in all the festivities with free admission. All proceeds from the event will be donated to the HALOS Summer Camp Program for abused and neglected children in Charleston County.

The tournament pairs 28 amateurs with a rotation of 14 pros from around the Southeast for ten round-robin sets, followed by a playoff. Saturday afternoon will also feature a Wine Tasting, Spectator Party with soft drinks, beer, and margaritas, and a Silent Auction.

Silent Auction item donations are requested, Corporate Sponsorships are available, and financial contributions are welcome. Current Gold and Platinum Sponsors include Assurant Health, Bodacious Bagels, Eyraud Enterprises, The I’On Club, Jacob’s Kitchen/The Inn at I’On, and Merrill Lynch (Costa Chakeris and James Hennessy).

The HALOS Summer Camp Program provides financial assistance in sending abused and neglected children to summer camp in the Charleston area – typically a public recreation, sports, music, or arts day camp. Some children have chosen a Youth Summer Leadership Program. These opportunities would not be available without the financial support from HALOS, and they can have a life-long positive affect in the child.

“Camp experiences are so important for children.” said HALOS Executive Director Kim Clifton. She adds, ”The children who attend gain important life skills and enjoy fun during their out of school times, but it also means that caregivers can continue working and that children are in safe care. The costs of camp and other summer activities often mean that the children who need the experiences the most – those who have been abused and neglected – do not have access. This tournament will help us ensure that all children who need it will go to camp.”

South of Broadway Film Premiere THIS SUNDAY

The North Charleston theater company, South of Broadway, is presenting its first feature documentary entitled “Performing Arts Bootcamp: Summer in the City 2008″ this Sunday, Jan. 25 at 5:00 pm at 1080 E. Montague Ave, right past Park Circle. The film covers South of Broadway’s 2008 summer program for performing arts students, which takes them to New York City for classes at Juilliard and meetings with some of the brightest stars in the city. It’s a great chance to discover some of the incredible arts programs that we have right here in the Lowcountry.
