Mixson Wins Prestigious Award
Exciting news: Mixson has won a Congress for the New Urbanism Charter Award, which is an incredible honor! The press release from CNU describes Mixson as an “artful, environmentally-minded” infill development, and CNU’s awards info page calls its winners ”urbanism’s gold standard.”Â
The awards are given each year to projects that best embody and advance the principles of the Charter of the New Urbanism. Some of those principles include walkable, pedestrian-friendly neighborhoods; offering a broad range of housing types and pricing to attract diversity of age and income;  preserving green space, from untouched natural expanses to baseball parks and public squares; and the availability of many activities of daily living within walking distance of most residences. If you’d like to see the full charter, click here. Mixson easily meets all of the criteria outlined in the charter, and surpasses the charter in terms of environmental sustainability, with our use of AAC for construction, and LEED and Energy Star certification for all homes.Â
To enter, we had to submit a project description, outlining Mixson’s goals and scope, along with a “Response to Charter Principles,” which showed why and how Mixson exemplifies New Urbanism, and a “Lessons Learned” section, giving examples of creative ways Mixson overcame common obstacles. Images of the site and the planned buildings were the final part of the application. We sent it all off hopefully, and waited two very long months to find out the results. And now, we are all incredibly pleased to find that the hard work paid off, and Mixson’s high environmental and urban standards are being applauded.
