Pizza, Beer, and Curious Neighbors at Mixson Office

The Mixson office in North Charleston opened its doors for an evening of eating, drinking, and merriment–with a multimedia info session thrown in–on Thursday, November 8. Hosted by Thea Riley of Perfectly Park Circle, and with food and drink provided by Evo, an artisan pizzeria located a couple of doors down from the Mixson office, and Coast, a new, local, organic brewery, the event drew a varied crowd of about 30 people. From couples to singles, artists to real estate agents, anyone with an enthusiasm for the historic Park Circle area and Mixson’s unprecedented sustainability (it’s the largest development in the country to pursue LEED certification for its every building) was in attendance.

The night began with a seemingly endless supply of pizza. In keeping with the event’s environmentally friendly tone, Evo was the restaurant of choice–not only for its excellent quality, but also because it uses many local ingredients and could walk the food over rather than drive. After about an hour of mingling, chatting, and meeting new friends, Richard Freeman introduced Mixson’s informational video. The 10 minute video, produced by Kevin Harrison, details the history of the Mixson Avenue area, the I’On Group’s vision for the neighborhood, and the environmental guidelines along which Mixson will be built (including a segment playfully nicknamed “Everything you’d ever want to know about concrete,” presented by Mixson’s very own Richard!). Afterwards, the party resumed with even more energy: there were, after all, lots of new topics to consider. The historical implications of the Mixson site, what Mixson might do for local businesses, new possibilities for public transportation, and of course, concrete, all made their way proudly into conversation.

The party-goers left armed with Mixson booklets, and, one hopes, a stronger conviction in the feasibility of truly sustainable communities. Perhaps some even met their future neighbors.
