The Rookery
As a follow-up to the neighborhood meeting Oct. 17 about the I’On Rookery, we wanted to update residents and friends who may be concerned about its status. At the meeting, I’On resident and bird expert, Craig Richard, who has observed and reported about birds in I’On for many years, discussed declines in the great egret population in the Rookery.
In response to these concerns, the I’On Company has hired an environmental company to study the issue and provide solutions to revitalize and continue to maintain a healthy Rookery. One culprit appears to be a higher than average water level that has affected many trees in which the birds nest. This is easily fixed, however, by adjusting the water level and planting new trees. Artificial nesting platforms may also be added to the island. Other possible solutions may include screening walking paths with live fences. The study will take place in the next few weeks, and afterward the I’On Company will implement the suggested solutions to ensure a successful spring in the Rookery next year.
Please check back for more updates in the next few weeks, but if you have any questions about the Rookery in the meantime, please feel free to contact Craig Richard, craigjen@aol.com.
