Seven Green Building Trends for 2009

Jetson Green just released a list of green building trends to keep an eye on in 2009, and here they are summarized (by me, not Jetson Green) – for Jetson Green’s  full explanations, head over to their site.

1. Non-green will not survive. Not surprising, given the state of the real estate market.  Even the marginally green products might not survive.  Good thing Mixson homes are receiving their LEED Gold status…

2. Change leadership will thrive. We saw the beginning of this trend with the election of Obama – I think we all sense that in the next year, and probably many years to come, it’s the movers and the shakers, not the status quo, who will take the reins.

3.  Policy activity will accelerate. Government policy, that is.

4. Everything will shift. I bet you could apply this one to more than green building…

5. Efficiency and energy will come into focus. Energy efficiency saves money, which is something we all will probably need to do this coming year.

6. Legitimate impact labels may develop. Let’s hope this one comes true – LEED is just the beginning of third-party certifications.  Maybe next will come carbon footprint labels, water efficiency labels, air quality labels, etc.

7. Beware of green fatigue and words. Meaning, as the author aptly points out, things like putting the prefix eco-  onto normal words.  Point taken.  I’m going to work on it. :-)
