The 100 Thing Challenge

Time Magazine has an article in their June 16 issue about the 100 Thing Challenge, a grassroots movement that must be gaining popularity – it was featured in Time, after all – in which people challenge themselves to whittle away their excess belongings until they own only 100 things. The idea was started by a guy in San Diego named Dave Bruno (he records his progress and keeps an inventory of the things he’s keeping, selling, and giving away on his blog), and gained a following of people pledging to rid themselves of the burden of material abundance.

It’s an appealing idea – especially in this particular cultural moment of ours, when the consequences of our living the last two hundred years like they were one big wasteful party are finally catching up to us- to rid yourself of all that extra stuff that’s weighing you down. For example, one guy in the Time article said that ten years earlier, he wore fedoras and made crepes every week; he doesn’t do any of that anymore, but the hats and the crepe pans were still sitting around. Now, however, they’re on eBay.

Would you take the 100 Thing Challenge? I’d like to extend this question to Mixson owners especially, who are already taking a big step in “smallifying” their lifestyles by moving to right-sized, efficient, green homes. Let us know if you do by sending us a comment- we’d love to hear about your progress!
