This one’s for you, movie lovers

With James Island’s Terrace Theater going under new management, the inaugural Charleston International Film Festival, and the many art shows, performance events, and small screenings that have emerged to showcase the work of talented local filmmakers, the past two years have seen heartening growth in the Charleston film scene.  And the newest development?  The Olde Village Talking Picture House, a venture by the newly formed Greater Park Circle Film Society, that will show independent films, documentaries, and shorts, as well as work by local professional and student filmmakers.

Their premiere is THIS SATURDAY, Dec. 6, at 3 and 8 pm, and it’s completely FREE.  You even get popcorn!  The movie shown will be “What Would Jesus Buy?,” a documentary on America’s shopping obsession that follows Reverend Billy and the Church of Stop Shopping Gospel Choir (an organization working for free trade, local economies and businesses, reclamation of public space and historical buildings…you name it, if it’s non-corporate, they’re there) across the US as they preach against rampant consumerism.

The Old Village Talking Picture House is at South of Broadway, at 1080 E. Montague in N. Charleston.  To see their movie schedule and learn more, visit the Film Society’s website.

(Congrats, Mixson residents, on getting an independent movie house within walking distance of your new homes!  Things just keep getting better and better…)

  1. I re-read your opening sentence a few times and now am pretty confident you were saying that – in the last few years – Michael Furlinger bought the Terrace Theater and contributed to the local movie scene.

He has done a heckuva GREAT job with the place and I look forward to many, many more enjoyable visits to Michael’s theater.

Also good to hear about the new indie theater on East Montague near Park Circle.
